So, you’ve booked your first infrared sauna session at DROP — or you’re thinking about it and want to know what you’re actually walking into. Good. Knowing what to expect makes the whole experience better, and it’s one less thing standing between you and 40 minutes you’ll actually look forward to.
Here’s a straightforward, no-fluff walkthrough of what happens from the moment you book to the moment you walk out.
Before You Book: What Infrared Sauna Actually Is
Quick context, because this trips people up: an infrared sauna isn’t like the steamy, 190°F wood-paneled sauna you might picture from a gym locker room. Infrared saunas use light to heat your body directly, rather than heating the air around you. That means you get a deep, therapeutic sweat at a lower, more tolerable temperature — typically 120–140°F instead of 180°F+.
If you’ve tried a traditional sauna and found it unbearable, this is often a completely different experience.
What to Wear
Whatever you’re comfortable sweating in, but we recommend going in your ‘birthday suite’ (also known as – naked). If that’s not your comfort level, then some people wear a swimsuit, athletic shorts and a tank, or just shorts. There’s no dress code beyond “something you don’t mind getting sweaty” — this isn’t a pool, so there’s no need to worry about anyone else’s opinion of your swimsuit body. You are COMPLETELY PRIVATE. We provide towels to sit on and to wipe down with during your session.
What to Bring
- Water (or grab one from us) — hydration before and after matters more than during
- A change of clothes if you’re heading elsewhere afterward
- Contacts wearers may want their glasses for after — some people find their eyes feel dry post-session
Leave the phone in your bag if you can. This is 40 minutes that’s supposed to be yours.
Arriving for Your Session

Plan to arrive 10–15 minutes early for your first visit. We’ll walk you through the studio, answer any questions, and make sure you’re set up in your suite before your session timer starts. You won’t be rushed into the heat — this part is casual.
During the Session: Minute by Minute
First 5–10 minutes: You’ll notice the warmth build gradually rather than hit you all at once. This is normal — infrared heat works by warming you from the inside, so the ramp-up feels different from a traditional sauna’s immediate blast of hot air.
10–20 minutes: This is usually when the real sweating starts. Your heart rate will pick up slightly, similar to what you’d feel during a brisk walk or light cardio. Some people notice their skin flushing — also normal, it’s your circulation doing its job.
20–35 minutes: You’re in the sweet spot. Most people settle in here — reading, listening to a podcast, or just sitting with their thoughts. If you start to feel lightheaded, dizzy, or overly uncomfortable at any point, that’s your body’s signal to step out. There’s no prize for pushing through — infrared benefits come from consistency, not endurance.
35–40+ minutes: Sessions typically wrap up here, though how long you stay is up to you and your comfort level, especially your first time.
After Your Session
Give yourself a few minutes before rushing out the door. Rehydrate, cool down gradually, and expect to feel a little flushed and very relaxed — many people describe it as similar to the loose, worked-out feeling after light exercise, minus the soreness.
Don’t be surprised if you sleep well that night.

Common First-Timer Questions
Will it feel like I can’t breathe, like a steam room? No. Since infrared heats you directly rather than filling the room with hot, humid air, most people find it much easier to breathe than a traditional sauna or steam room.
Is it safe if I have a health condition? Infrared sauna use is generally well tolerated, but if you have a cardiovascular condition, are pregnant, or are managing a chronic illness, check with your doctor before your first session. We’re always happy to talk through any concerns before you book.
How will I feel afterward — energized or wiped out? Most people describe it as “calm-energized” — relaxed but clear-headed, not drained. If you feel unusually fatigued afterward, it may mean you need more water before your next session.
Do I need to be “in shape” to do this? Not at all. You’re sitting still. The physiological response is similar to moderate exercise, but there’s no physical exertion required on your part.
